Eight Florida Officers Fired And 11 Disciplined For Handling Of Murder Case

Mary Gingles

A south Florida sheriff’s office has fired six more deputies and disciplined 11 others for their handling of the case of Mary Gingles, a woman who investigators say was murdered by her estranged husband after she had warned authorities for months that she feared he would kill her.

Two officers had previously been dismissed for their role in the case.

An internal investigation found that multiple Broward county sheriff’s office deputies failed to properly investigate Gingles’ reports of domestic violence perpetrated by her husband, Nathan Gingles, before he allegedly carried out the triple homicide of his wife, her father – David Ponzer – and her neighbor Andrew Ferrin, as the Gingles’ four-year-old daughter begged her father to stop.

When All Protest Is Terrorism

Crush Ice sign at a protest

The United States government doesn’t ban political organizations outright, but it does have a legal apparatus, put in place almost a quarter-century ago, for transmogrifying protesters into prosecutable terrorists. “Nearly half of all Americans now live in a state where it’s harder to protest than it was eight years ago,” said Elly Page, an attorney who runs the US Protest Law Tracker at the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law. Some of the bills mandated extreme punishments for those who slow-march in roadways and block motorists. If 25 or more people impede traffic in Florida, they can be charged with “rioting” and face 15 years.

Nuclear "mushroom cloud"

Republicans triggered the “nuclear option” to change the rules of the Senate on a party-line basis Thursday, a move that will allow them to speed up confirmation of President Donald Trump’s nominees for key executive branch positions.

The vote was 53-45 to establish a new rule that allows the Senate to confirm an unlimited number of nominees en bloc, rather than process each one individually.

Florida Appeals Court Decision Allows Openly Carrying Guns

Man shooting a gun

In a landmark decision, a Florida appeals court on Wednesday struck down Florida’s law against openly carrying a gun in public as unconstitutional, a decades-old statute that made Florida one of only a handful of states banning gun owners from carrying a pistol on their hip or slinging a rifle over their shoulder in public.

DNC targets Anna Paulina Luna in New ‘Release the Files’ Ad

Anna Paulina Luna

The DNC digital ad includes a photo of Trump and Epstein together, with the “certain things in common” quote printed over it. At the bottom, the ad issues a call to action to voters to “Call Rep. Anna Paulina Luna” and, in all caps, “demand they release the files,” a reference to the infamous Epstein files that Trump himself once said should be released.

Florida health insurance premiums set to spike as federal tax credits near expiration

Stethoscope, money, and calculator collage representing healthcare costs

Millions of Floridians could soon face skyrocketing health insurance costs. State regulators have approved steep increases to marketplace plans, and at the same time, federal tax credits that help offset premiums are set to expire.

Florida would be hit harder than any other state if Congress fails to extend the program. The state leads the nation in the number of people buying private health insurance through the marketplace. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates 1.4 million Floridians could lose coverage, nearly doubling the uninsured rate.

Florida Surgeon General Admits He Banned Vaccine Mandates Based on Vibes

Florida Surgeon General Ladapo

After his announcement this week that he would seek to eliminate “all vaccine mandates,” Florida’s surgeon general, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, made one thing clear: This decision was based on no science, just vibes. Under Ladapo’s leadership, Florida’s rates of routine childhood vaccination—shots that protect against catastrophic diseases like polio and tetanus—have already declined. Today, the immunization rate for kindergartners is 90 percent, the lowest it’s been in a decade, and below the threshold required to prevent the spread of some serious illnesses. The rate of families seeking religious exemptions to school vaccine requirements has increased over the past few years.”
