Florida Ranks Last In Reading, Warns Nationwide Education Report

Small group of children reading a book

The latest findings by researchers at Harvard and Stanford are based on 2024-25 state test results, combined with national assessment data, to pinpoint trends in learning.
Students in Florida are falling behind in reading and math, compared to other states, and one in three children miss too much school, according to a nationwide report called the Education Scorecard, released on Wednesday.

While some states made post-pandemic gains in reading, Florida students’ reading ability declined the most in the last four years. The average Florida student is more than half a grade level behind where the average student was in 2022.

That downward trend shows scores are “declining rapidly,” said co-author Sean Reardon, a professor at Stanford University.

‘Disgrace’: Horror As Florida’s New History Course Calls Slavery A ‘Necessary Evil’

Slaves in Florida working in a field of crops

The curriculum will describe slavery as a “necessary evil,” frame Plessy v Ferguson as a result of “the failure of Reconstruction” after the Civil War, and credit federal law that counted slaves as three-fifths of a person for “decreased slave power representation.”

‘Medical freedom’ on Special Session Agenda

COVID Vaccine

If passed, the bill would require informed consent from parents about vaccines before administering, immunizing doctors from penalties and liability if they give out ivermectin and allowing pharmacists to do the same upon request. The proposal also allows the “conscience-based objection” to childhood inoculations.

“The bill also makes permanent Florida’s existing ban on discrimination based on a person’s mRNA vaccination status and protects Floridians from forced vaccinations during emergencies,” Albritton wrote earlier this week.

This Fall, Florida Students Will Be Forced to Take “Anti-Communist” Classes

DeSantis speaking in front of a "Free State of Florida" banner

Beginning in the fall of 2026, all Florida middle and high school students will be required to take a yearly social studies class on the history of communism. The curriculum has already received the stamp of approval from the conservative Heritage Foundation (the group behind Project 2025), a right-wing nonprofit organization called the National Association of Scholars (NAS) and a NAS spinoff called the Civics Alliance, and it follows on the heels of the state’s 2022 imposition of Victims of Communism Day, which is now held every November 7 to mark the start of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution in Russia. The annual commemoration requires schools to provide a minimum of 45 minutes of instruction on “the horrors of communism” and the “destructiveness of Marxism-Leninism.” Programming is also expected to inculcate “an appreciation for the founding principles of the American republic.” What these principles are is not specified.

‘Deliberate Attack’: Sociology’s Removal From Florida General Education Draws Criticism

Students and teacher in a classroom setting

In 2024, the board removed sociology from a list of six “state core” classes students could use to fulfill their social science requirement. Earlier this year, Florida began requiring the use of a new state-approved textbook in sociology courses. The new version omits topics on race, gender and sexuality present in an earlier, much longer version of the text.

“What we have are nonacademics trying to control a curriculum and impose it on academics, which just feels bizarre and even surreal,” Levenson said about the series of decisions.

The motion to remove sociology from general education wasn’t listed on the meeting agenda and wasn’t open for public comment. Rather, it was a surprise vote initiated by Ray Rodrigues, the State University System chancellor.

Dozens of students showed up to the protest organized by FAMU Students for a Democratic Society, a student coalition in Tallahassee, where the university is located.

Ignoring Public’s Concerns, House Committee Passes Bill Targeting ‘Harmful’ Books At Schools

Banned books in a library display with a banner above that says "Read Banned Books"

As the public overwhelmingly spoke out against a bill targeting books deemed “harmful to children” in public school libraries, one Democrat allied with Republicans to advance the legislation through its final committee stop.

With a 16-5 vote, the House Education and Employment Committee OK’d HB 1119 sponsored by Rep. Doug Bankson. The bill is now ready for the House floor.

Rep. Kim Daniels, a Jacksonville Democrat who has a history of siding with Republicans on social issues, voted in favor of the bill.

Red States: Less Freedom, More Poverty, Shorter Lives

Governors DeSantis, Abbo, Pritzker, Newsom

After analyzing comprehensive federal data from 2023-2024 across states with at least eight years of consistent party control,² the conclusion is inescapable: Democratic states crush Republican states on health outcomes, education quality, and personal freedoms. Republican states have lower taxes and cheaper housing. That’s about it.

DeSantis administration pushes to eliminate all vaccine mandates in Florida

COVID Vaccine

Florida would be the first in the nation to completely eliminate vaccine requirements that many health experts credit with nearly eliminating some diseases. Public Citizen’s Health Research Group Director Robert Steinbrook said ending all vaccine mandates is a “recipe for disaster” and goes in the wrong direction. He urged the Legislature to stand against the DeSantis administration.
