The Tallahassee City Commission is biding its time in determining what to do about the immigration enforcement assistance agreement between the Tallahassee Police Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. n a unanimous vote Sept. 3, commissioners followed the lead of Mayor John E. Dailey, who asked that the city wait for further judicial review in connection to an ongoing case in South Florida before moving forward with any resolutions.

US withdraws from key UN human rights report, draws criticism from rights advocates

The United States will not participate in a U.N. review of its human rights record, officials said, a move that rights advocates called a worrying retreat from Washington’s global engagement on rights and justice issues. According to an analysis of the council’s public records, the U.S. is now on course to be the first country to not deliver a report to the UPR, unless it submits a report within the timeframe of the current review period, which ends in July 2027.

Northern District of California Judge Charles Breyer ruled that the Trump administration “violated the Posse Comitatus Act,” which prohibits the use of the military as a mechanism of civilian law enforcement, when it deployed hundreds of members of the National Guard, and later U.S. Marines, to Los Angeles in response to protests against raids and arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Who can get a COVID-19 vaccine?

CVS said Friday that it’s not offering COVID-19 vaccinations in 16 states and Washington, DC, due to the current regulatory environment: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. Walgreens also said in an email that most of its pharmacies are preparing to offer the COVID-19 vaccine where regulations allow.

Florida taxpayers could be on the hook for $218 million the state spent to convert a remote training airport in the Everglades into an immigration detention center dubbed “ Alligator Alcatraz.” The Florida Division of Emergency Management will lose most of the value of the $218 million it has invested in making the little-used airport suitable for a detention center, a state official said in court papers.

The CDC Quietly Scaled Back A Surveillance Program For Foodborne Illnesses

As of July 1, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) program has reduced surveillance to just two pathogens: salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), a spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told NBC News.

Before July, the program had been tracking infections caused by six additional pathogens: campylobacter, cyclospora, listeria, shigella, vibrio and Yersinia. Some of them can lead to severe or life-threatening illnesses, particularly for newborns and people who are pregnant or have weakened immune systems.

Leon County Questions FDOT’s Misguided War on Safe Crosswalks

In an Aug. 21 memo, the Florida Department of Transportation issued an ultimatum to Leon County: remove all pavement safety markings in crosswalks by Sept. 4 or risk losing critical state funding. The Capital City’s Crosswalks to Classrooms initiative, led by the Knight Creative Communities Institute (KCCI), was first piloted in 2022 with a single goal: to reduce risks at street crossings. Through public-private collaboration, the initiative implemented high-visibility, patterned markings at schools, senior communities, and busy neighborhood crossings. These markings were data-driven, privately funded, reviewed locally, and installed to enhance safety.

How Florida is becoming more of an ‘outlier’ on capital punishment

Twenty-seven states, including Florida, allow the death penalty; governors in four of those states have paused executions. Overall, Florida is becoming “more and more an outlier on the death penalty,” said Megan Byrne, a senior staff attorney of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Capital Punishment Project.

Florida’s death warrant process in particular is opaque, several experts and death penalty opponents told PBS News.
