Texas Dems’ flight to stymie GOP redistricting wouldn’t work in Florida

Florida Redistricting Map

Attempting to thwart a Republican move to draw more GOP districts, Democratic lawmakers in Texas fled the state for Illinois. That maneuver, however, wouldn’t work in Florida if Gov. Ron DeSantis called lawmakers in for a redistricting session, to redraw the state’s congressional district lines. Florida’s constitution only requires a simple majority for a quorum for the Legislature to conduct business, and Democrats comprise a superminority in the House and Senate.

High cost of tariffs

Without authorization from Congress, Trump has built an economic wall around our country. What Trump called “liberation day,” is the launch of a new global economic order, one that penalizes trade, punished American consumers, upends international relationships, and will ultimately slow economic growth everywhere.

How *YOU* Can Protect Democracy

People working together to protect democracy

There is good news: Regular citizens are the ones best suited to strengthen our democracy. This is especially true at the local level, where our sphere of influence is greatest.

Challenge yourself (and others!) to complete as many as you can in the coming year. Some take less than 30 seconds, some may take months, and some will never truly be complete. Protecting democracy is a generational struggle.

Florida celebrates Bob Graham Day

Bob Graham

People seem to forget that once upon a time Florida had leaders who actually cared about the environment, the rule of law, and the lives of ordinary Floridians. Today, Florida (and Tallahassee Indivisible) honor the legacy of Bob Graham, who was a true leader in the areas of education and the environment.

The Office of Federal Student Aid Is Under Attack

Masters students at graduation.

Cuts to the Department of Education have made it difficult for FSA to carry out its functions, and students and working families are already feeling the impact. One survey by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) found that both students and colleges report facing significant delays when seeking information about awards. These delays are affecting the entire higher-education ecosystem.

Democrats demand answers on using nuclear modernization funds to renovate Trump’s Qatari jet

Trump's airplane in flight.

Democratic lawmakers are demanding answers from Air Force Secretary Troy Meink on whether funds for a nuclear modernization program are being raided to pay for retrofits to the luxury jet that Qatar gifted to President Donald Trump. Meink told senators earlier this year that the $400 million Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet will need “significant modifications” to meet Air Force One standards and reports in recent weeks indicate the funding for them will come from the Air Force’s Sentinel nuclear missile program

Learn about Redistricting in Florida

Dave's Redistricting

Republican Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez has called for a select committee to work on congressional redistricting, and Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has signaled he would support the effort. A new map could target two or three Democrats. Republicans already control 20 of the state’s 28 seats, thanks to an aggressive map DeSantis pushed through the legislature in 2021 that flipped four Democratic seats in 2022. Redistricting is almost certainly coming to Florida – the time to get informed about what this means for YOUR district is now!
