The hidden costs of cutting Medicaid

Doctor vaccinating patient

Health care is different from other goods, like movie tickets, cocktails, or cars. If people can’t pay for health care, they don’t suddenly stop needing it. So, where do people get their health care if they don’t have health insurance? Increasing the uninsured population places financial burdens on two important parts of the social safety net: community health clinics and nonprofit hospitals. It also increases the probability of bankruptcy by 40%.

Florida Expected to Follow Texas GOP’s Lead on Mid-Decade Redistrict Power Grab

DeSantis and Trump

Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez (R) announced Thursday the formation of a Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting that would begin reexamining the state’s current map, which holds 20 Republican and eight Democratic seats. The announcement comes just weeks after the Florida Supreme Court rejected challenges to the state’s current GOP-drawn map, concluding that restoring a Black-performing district violated the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause and would be a racial gerrymander.

DHS is a Menace

ICE jumping out of a rental truck to kidnap people at Home Depot

DHS appears to have morphed into a brutal, lawless gang of street thugs reminiscent of dictatorial shock troops in other autocratic regimes. Run by an unqualified and publicity-seeking secretary, egged on by the infamously anti-immigrant scare-mongers Stephen Miller and Tom Homan, and designed to impress a racist president who ran on the fear immigrants were “poisoning our blood,” DHS has become a disgrace, a human rights nightmare, and a legal scofflaw.

Helping people leave MAGA

MAGA hat on fire

People who voted for Trump are our family members, neighbors, coworkers, and community members. Community is the antidote to fascism, and at this juncture, it’s imperative that we build community in every form, in every direction, with everyone we encounter; including people who have drastically different political values.
