TELL FOX NEWS TO FIRE BRIAN KILMEADE AND HIS COMPLICIT CO-HOSTS AINSLEY EARHARDT AND LAWRENCE JONES
Last Wednesday (September 10) Brian Kilmeade of Fox “News”, flanked by his co-hosts Ainsley Earnhardt and Lawrence jones, suggested that homeless people should be mass-murdered by lethal injection.
According to the AP:
Kilmeade’s initial comment came on a “Fox & Friends” episode Wednesday and began getting widespread circulation online over the weekend. Kilmeade, a host of the morning show, was talking with co-hosts Lawrence Jones and Ainsley Earhardt about the Aug. 22 stabbing murder of Iryna Zarutska on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina.
A homeless and mentally ill man, Decarlos Brown Jr., was arrested for murder, and the case received extensive attention on Fox following the release of a security video of the stabbing.
Jones was talking on “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday about public money spent on trying to help homeless people and suggested that those who didn’t accept services offered to them should be jailed.
“Or involuntary lethal injection, or something,” Kilmeade said. “Just kill ‘em.”
Earhardt interjected, “Why did it have to get to this point?” Kilmeade replied, “I will say this, we’re not voting for the right people.”
This comment, made in an era of unrelenting violence fomented by the permission-giving commentary of right-wing celebrities and politicians, is an explicit call to violence against the homeless. Yesterday, three days after making these dehumanizing comments, Kilmeade issued a very weak apology for ‘his remarks’. Note that he does not apologize for WHAT he said, just THAT he said it outloud, on national TV.
The fact that the (non) apology took three days and that his employer, Fox News, did not IMMEDIATELY take action to remove Kilmeade and his co-hosts from the airwaves is the real tell about who is inciting violence in this county and who they believe is expendable in their war on American society – the homeless, the mentally ill, black and brown people, the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, and non-Christians have all had violent rhetoric aimed at them from the right-wing and this has ramped up SIGNIFICANTLY in the past few days, in the aftermath of the murder of Charlie Kirk.
Every call to violence creates a permission-giving structure for right-wing zealots to act out their worst fantasies. In a culture awash in guns, misinformation, and hate, a national news host suggesting that a certain class of people should be murdered en-mass is akin to dropping a match in a can of gasoline. Brian Kilmeade and his complicit co-hosts must be shunned by decent people everywhere. The best time for Fox to fire all three of them would have been within an hour of the broadcast – the second-best time is NOW.
CALL ON FOX NEWS TO IMMEDIATELY FIRE BRIAN KILMEADE AND HIS COMPLICIT CO-HOSTS AND TO ISSUE A FULL RETRACTION OF THE VIOLENT STATEMENTS FROM KILMEADE CONDONING MASS MURDER OF THOSE WHO ARE HOMELESS.
WHILE IT IS LIKELY THAT NOTHING WILL BE DONE BY FOX, A MASSIVE PUSHBACK ON KILMEADE’S COMMENTS IN PARTICULAR, AND THE OVERALL VIOLENT TENOR OF FOX NEWS HOSTS IN GENERAL LETS THEM KNOW WE SEE WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND THE VIOLENCE THEY CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE ON AIRWAVES WHICH ULTIMATELY BELONG TO US, THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA.
