It’s the Billionaires, Stupid

Crowd gathered for the beheading of Louis XVI

That is why for Democrats who hope to win in 2026 and 2028, it is increasingly clear that the core message is: It’s the billionaires, stupid.

Either we find leaders who are willing to end elite impunity and oligarchic power grabs and widespread exploitation or we will sink and sink into an authoritarian dystopia engineered to meet the needs of a tiny fraction of our people.

Will the Texas Supreme Court Legalize Child Abuse?

Teenagers holding protest signs "Protect Our Future" in front of a courthouse.

Editor’s Note: Under DeSantis and the Republicans, Florida tends to follow Texas’ lead on every bad idea. “Parental Rights” has long had traction in Florida. Take some time to read this article and think about what that phrase REALLY means in relation to our children. Parents can refuse to treat their sick children, refuse to vaccinate their vulnerable children, refuse to allow them to attend schools that do not hew to their religious doctrine – all things we allow in Florida RIGHT NOW. In many states, parents can bless the marriage of their young daughters to old men against their will – Florida allows it at 16 years old. Various types of punishments are perfectly legal and many – including in Florida – would like to see more violent punishment of children in our public schools. Where do the rights of parents end and the rights of children begin?

Bill to Designate Domestic Terrorist Organizations Advances in Florida House

Protester holding "Protect the right to protest" sign

The bill passed the committee, 16-4, with Democrats Edmonds and Kim Daniels joining the majority of Republicans in approving the measure. It now moves to its third and final committee before it could reach the House floor. A companion bill (SB 1632) sponsored by Sen. Erin Grall, R-Vero Beach, has two more committee stops before going to the full Senate for consideration.

Proposal To Overhaul Voter Citizenship Verification Clears House Committee

Your Vote Matters

A sweeping elections proposal from Fort Myers Republican Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka has advanced through its first House Committee in the face of sharp Democratic criticism.

The bill (HB 991) would require verification of U.S. citizenship before voters can cast a regular ballot, mandate statewide rechecks of existing voter rolls and overhaul how Florida audits election results.

Ignoring Public’s Concerns, House Committee Passes Bill Targeting ‘Harmful’ Books At Schools

Banned books in a library display with a banner above that says "Read Banned Books"

As the public overwhelmingly spoke out against a bill targeting books deemed “harmful to children” in public school libraries, one Democrat allied with Republicans to advance the legislation through its final committee stop.

With a 16-5 vote, the House Education and Employment Committee OK’d HB 1119 sponsored by Rep. Doug Bankson. The bill is now ready for the House floor.

Rep. Kim Daniels, a Jacksonville Democrat who has a history of siding with Republicans on social issues, voted in favor of the bill.

Become a Trained Witness: When ICE Shows Up, Document It Right

Image of an ICE agent. Text: Become a Trained Witness. When ICE shows up, document it right.

When ICE activity in a community starts to look like intimidation — questionable stops, aggressive tactics, people terrified to leave their homes — the helplessness is real. Marching, mutual aid, and contacting elected officials still matter. They build solidarity, keep pressure on leaders, and remind targeted neighbors they aren’t alone.

But there’s another approach that matters in moments like this: credible witness video and testimony. If you want a street-level role that’s legal, non-violent, and useful, don’t just shoot video — become a trained witness. More impact. More accountability.

This Is America, Just Not the America You Knew

Closeup of a hand with the word "listen" written on the palm. Civil rights protestors are in the background.

I understand why you are feeling afraid right now. But I need you to understand something just as clearly: this is what Black America has been living with for generations at the hands of local police.

We need to talk about how policing works in this country for Black people, how the story gets written before the body hits the ground.

The Democrats’ Long-Awaited Spine

ICE agent assaulting a civilian

The Senate Democratic Caucus met late Sunday and agreed to block $64.4 billion in funding for the Department of Homeland Security (which includes $10 billion for ICE) unless several key conditions are attached to restrain ICE thuggery and mayhem. The long-delayed show of Democratic spine came after the latest ICE murder, of VA intensive care nurse Alex Pretti.

Detailed language on the conditions is to be finalized today.

Video Contradicts Trump Administration Account of Minneapolis Killing

ICE agents brutalize and murder Alex Pretti on the street in Minnesota

A new video published on social media contradicts the Department of Homeland Security’s account of why federal agents killed 37-year-old Minneapolis man Alex Pretti in broad daylight on Saturday.

They Want to Tell You a Kid With a Spider-Man Backpack Is Evil

5-year-old Liam Ramos, in his bunny hat and spidey backpack, being detained by ICE to be used as "bait" to lure his family members out of the house.

Here is a preschooler wearing a Spider-Man backpack, just like all of our kids, as the hand of a much larger masked ICE agent holds onto his backpack, as if he were a flight risk. An oversized blue hat with bunny ears partially covers his face as he stares ahead blankly. Liam and his father will eventually be sent to an immigration detention center just outside San Antonio, but not before, as school officials reported, federal officers attempted to turn the child into “bait” by persuading him to knock on his own front door to see if there were other family members they could apprehend inside. Speaking to federal agents in a closed-door meeting, Vice President JD Vance defended ICE’s actions.

This Year’s First Big Stupid Idea: “Retrain ICE”

ICE sprays detained protestor in the face with pepper spray

The idea that a right-wing goon squad can somehow be reformed through the magic of Powerpoint presentations is squarely rooted in the fear among the Beltway-brained that proposing to abolish this rogue agency is going to cost Democrats a winnable election. I’m not sure where these fears find their foundation given that when “Abolish ICE” was in vogue, Democrats did great: They won in 2018 and 2020 and surprisingly overperformed in 2022. Then they got to 2024 and lost, not long after they took a rightward turn on immigration in an attempt to prove that they could be tougher on migrants than Trump was, as if his main failing was that his draconian immigration policies weren’t dressed up in enough management consultant–speak.
